Turkyan Cheshma fountain

Overview

Turkyan Cheshma fountain is a fountain-monument built in honor of those who died during the Revival process. On December 26, 1984, locals who disagreed with the name change protested. Police opened fire. The uniformed men went to repel the protesters with shields. Firefighters also intervened, directing strong jets of water at the people. Aisha Hassan, 45, Musa Yakub, 43, and 17-month-old Turkyan, crushed and strangled by the crowd, were killed in the crackdown. Decades after the dramatic events, the dead minor is a symbol of the struggle for human rights.
