Thracian Tumulus ( Ancient Beehive Tomb - Heroon)
Overview
The dating of the tomb mausoleum dates back to the II-IV century AD. The tomb is known among the locals as "the Hollow Mound".
It has been declared a cultural monument of national importance.
The mausoleum consists of two vestibules, a dromos (corridor), and a central chamber. Traces on the entrance step suggest that there was a double door here, repeatedly opened. In ancient times, religious rituals were performed in the mausoleum.
The chamber is a semi-cylindrical ring with a central hollow column supporting the arch, which expands upwards like a sponge and merges with the round wall of the hall. This architectural technique is a unique feature of the ancient monument. Traces of mortar plaster covered with dark green paint can be seen in the eastern part of the arch, so it was assumed that the central hall was plastered and decorated with frescoes. There are 5 symmetrically placed niches in the wall.
This unique monument combines Roman construction techniques with Thracian tradition.
