Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church - Pomorie
Overview
The first Bulgarian church in today's Pomorie is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, built by master Gencho Kanev. According to its plan, this church, as well as the Sozopol church "St. Cyril and Methodius ”is a new solution of a central building, influenced by the structure of Varna Cathedral. The dome was dismantled in the 1920s.
In the beginning, the temple had a simple wooden iconostasis. In 1909 - 1911 the artist from Kavakli (Topolovgrad) Dimitar Zograf painted icons for the two side wings of the iconostasis. The royal doors are from an older iconostasis, probably from another Anhial church. In 1959 the church was completely renovated. Тhe bell tower was then erected. The artists Rostovtsev, Yordanov, and Sorokin from Sofia painted the murals. The carved iconostasis was made by Krum Kosharevski from Burgas.
Scenes from the daily life of the Pomorie inhabitants are depicted in the church: sea salt production, grape-growing, and fishing.
