Overview

St. Nicholas is a Revival Orthodox Church in the town of Berkovitsa, Bulgaria.
The temple was built in the city center in 1871. It was consecrated the same year by the Metropolitan Dorothea of Sofia, who donated 5,000 groschen for the construction of the church.
Architecturally, it is a magnificent three-nave church with a women's church. The architect is the prominent Revival master Georgi Novakov Jongar. It is built of quarry, and in places of cut stone. After 1879 the building was upgraded by about 80 cm and a richly decorated dome was erected. A smaller dome has been erected above the side wings of the building, thus achieving greater monumentality. In 1898 master Pandul Popov built the bell tower at the entrance.
The iconostasis, the bishop's throne and the pulpit are probably the work of master Dimitar Fandakov. The iconostasis is movable, bent in the center towards the apse. His motives are flat and schematic. The authors of the icons are Konstantin Angelov and Danail Shtipliata.
The bell tower at the entrance was built in 1898.
In the yard of the church is the oldest class school in Berkovitsa, which now houses the City Art Gallery "Father Paisii".
