Overview

Residence "Evksinograd" is located 8 km north of Varna and is located on a 3-kilometer coastline near the resort "St. Constantine and Elena". The complex was the summer residence of the monarchs who ruled Bulgaria after the liberation from Ottoman rule (1878) - Alexander Battenberg, Ferdinand and Boris III. In 1880 Prince Battenberg visited Varna and was welcomed in the monastery "St. Dimitar", which was located on the site of today's residence. The monarch liked the nature here so much that two years later the Varna municipality gave him the monastery and the adjacent lands. An integral part of the Euxinograd complex is the palace park. For the formation of the park of 800 decares in 1888 Prince Ferdinand I attracted French park builders. Their project includes a rare collection of trees - from black oak to Atlantic cedar, which are the only species on the Balkan Peninsula. The bare and stony places are covered with fertile soil, taken mainly from the Kamchia river valley. To the northeast of the palace building are greenhouses for wintering palm trees and for flower production. More than 500 types of flowers and over 200 types of saplings are grown in them and in the ornamental nursery. There are several zones in the park: central (with the palace), Greek garden, English garden, riverside, beach and production and economic. Each of them is distinguished by its specific appearance and mood. The most elegant and representative part of the park is the space in front of the palace with a water area and a bronze statue of Neptune, delivered from France. In 1891, as part of the complex and as a successor to the old monastery cellar, the palace winery was established. The initiative for this belonged to Prince Ferdinand, and the plan was made by a German architect. The building is a neat house in Revival style. It includes an underground part on two levels, a reception wing, a laboratory, a bottling workshop, an administrative part and a tasting room, and its dimensions are the same as for a small boutique production. Euxinograd wines are still famous today for their excellent quality. Grapes from the Chardonnay, Riesling, Traminer, Muscat Otonel and Vratsa Muscat varieties are used in the production of the winery. White wines are produced by classical and modern methods and stored in oak barrels. The winery is also proud of its good brandy and organizes tastings of its best products for its guests. Another landmark in the area of ​​the residence are the remains of the late antique fortress "Kastritsi" in the northeastern part of the park.
