Early Christian basilica with mosaic
Overview
The fortress and the early Christian basilica are located next to one of the most beautiful beaches on our Black Sea coast. They were discovered and partially studied by the Shkorpil brothers in the early 20th century. A basilica was found in the fortress itself, which is typical of early Christianity three-nave basilica, but during the excavations were found mosaics, which are documented. The walls of the late antique fortress, in which the basilica is located, are almost destroyed. The stones have been removed, grass and trees have taken over the site, where there are even traces of arson. The fortress and the basilica are part of an archeological complex, which also includes a tomb and part of an old Bulgarian rampart. It is said to be the second studied monument of earth construction on the Black Sea coast.
