Prehistoric settlement mound
Overview
The research of the prehistoric settlement mound in the center of the Stara Zagora mineral baths proves that we have a unique archeological monument.
In the eastern part of the settlement mound, the team explored a ritual staircase made of stone boulders welded with sand, clay and limestone. Ceramic vessels, tools made of bone, flint and horn, anthropomorphic figurines and other objects were found. Located only 3 km from the copper mines in the region, artifacts found in the production of copper ore and copper products have been found in the mound. The results are a result of funding won by the Institute for Archaeo-Metallurgical Studies (IAMS) at University College London.
The local population, which mined copper ore, received a high social status after 4800 BC. and built the first temple in Southeastern Europe from the end of the Chalcolithic.
A table, a stone tesla and a horn digger are the tools found in the mound. With similar diggers in the nearby mines it was cut off after heating and flooding with water and copper ore. An anthropomorphic figurine with a necklace was also found.
The artifacts, slag, smelts and copper ores found will be examined at the Institute of Archaeometallurgical Research in London.
