Overview

Uhlovitsa is the name of a cave in the Sinite Virove area near the village of Uhlovitsa in the municipality of Smolyan in the Rhodopes, Bulgaria. Its name comes from the word ululitsa - a species of owl that probably lived in the region of the cave. The cave was discovered and explored by the cave club "Studenets", Chepelare, by Georgi and Dimitar Raychevi in ​​1968 - 1969. It is about 460 m long, of which 330 m are landscaped. Located in altitude 1040 meters above sea level. The average temperature is 10 - 11 ° C. At the end of the cave is the sinter White Waterfall (also known as the Ice Waterfall). Corals are found in the cave. The cave is on several floors. Upstairs is the Hall of Precipices. The throats of 4 deep precipices descend from this hall to the lower floor, which is reached by a steep metal staircase. The cave ends with 7 beautiful lakes, which fill with water in early spring. The most attractive formation is the large stone waterfall, sparkling in white. Uhlovitsa Cave is among the Hundred National Tourist Sites of the Bulgarian Tourist Union under number 84 has a seal. It is visited by an average of 15,000 people a year. Uhlovitsa was developed for tourists in 1984, the local population takes an active part.
