Chapel-mausoleum "St. George"
Overview
The chapel-mausoleum "St. George” was built in the period 1903-1907 in memory of the Russian and Romanian soldiers killed in the battles around Pleven during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877/1878.
The proposal for the construction was submitted for discussion to the committee "Tsar Liberator Alexander II" on May 18, 1902. At the end of the same year a national competition was announced, in which 12 Bulgarian architects participated. On March 23, 1903, the winner became known - arch. Pencho Koychev. The monumental building, a cultural monument, was built in the Bulgarian church style.
On April 24, 1903, Lieutenant General Danail Nikolaev, Yuri Bakhmetiev - Russian diplomatic agent, N. Mishu - Romanian Minister Plenipotentiary, Dr. Stoyan Danev - Prime Minister, Colonel Mikhail Savov - Minister of War and Dragan Tsankov - Chairman of The National Assembly solemnly laid the foundation stone of the chapel-mausoleum. With the 350,000 gold levs raised from donations and state funds, the construction of the monument began on Tsar Osvoboditel Square.
Prof. Zheko Spiridonov, Prof. Marin Vassilev, Prof. Ivan Travnitsky, Boris Mihailov, Prof. Ivan Markvichka, Prof. Anton Mitov participate in the artistic design.
The chapel-mausoleum "St. George” was inaugurated and consecrated on September 3, 1907, in the presence of Prince Ferdinand I, Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, son of Emperor Alexander II, Princess Maria Pavlovna and members of the committee" Tsar Liberator Alexander II ".
