Monument to the three remists - Haskovo
Overview
The Workers' Youth Union or RMU (pronounced "rems") is a youth organization uniting working youth in Bulgaria in the early 20th century. Its members were called remists. The monument to the Three Remsists in the Badema neighborhood was built in honor of Todorka Paunova, Ivan Raykov and Kancho Ivanov - young people, heroes who sacrificed their lives in the name of their ideals. They died on April 8, 1943, besieged in a barn near Haskovo, under bullets from the army and police. The monument of the Three Remsists is a bright representative of the so-called "totalitarian art" (more precisely it is "socialist art" or "socialist realism") in Bulgaria. The images are talentedly sculpted by the sculptor Dimitar Alexiev. The memorial was unveiled on November 6, 1974. The ceremony was attended by the relatives of the victims, the first secretary of the District Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party - Comrade Kortsanov, the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party - Comrade Atanasov, Chavdars, pioneers and Komsomol members. Comrade Ivanka Dimitrova, secretary of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party, spoke about the lives and exploits of the young people who died. The idea of erecting the Monument to the Three Remsists was then a call to generations to be loyal to the people, the party and the communist cause.
