Overview
Pirin National Park is located in the Pirin Mountains, in the southwestern part of Bulgaria. It was established in 1962 and was originally named Vihren National Park. At that time its area covered 6212 ha of the highest parts of the Demyanitsa and Vihren sections. Over the years, the territory of the park has increased significantly and today it covers over 40,000 hectares. Since 1983, the national park has been under the protection of UNESCO.
The proximity to Bansko resort makes the park an excellent option for day hikes. The scenery is spectacular. A lot of trekking trails - from easy to difficult, suitable for all ability levels, time-frame, and equipment. The paths are well marked, there are nice boards and also good maps.
Bulgaria’s oldest tree (1,300 years old) is also in the park; a short walk leads to it.
The park is home to many breathtaking views. The landscapes are all full of wonder and mystery. Exploring them on foot is rewarding with spectacular sights of mountain lakes, waterfalls, and fresh air.
