Overview

A museum exposition dedicated to the Russian Army has been opened in the town of Pordim, which positioned its headquarters here during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. In the period October 26 - December 10, 1877, the Russian headquarters in Pordim made many strategic decisions related to the war - the blockade of Pleven, the winter crossing of the Balkans, the project of the San Stefano Peace Treaty and others.

At different times in the city resided the Russian Emperor Alexander II, the Commander-in-Chief of the Danube Russian Army Prince Nikolai Nikolaevich, the Romanian Prince Carol I (see the museum "His Royal Highness Carol I"), prominent Russian military leaders (Count N. Ignatiev, Gen. N. Obruchev, Gen. D. Milutin, Gen. E. Totleben, Gen. J. Gurko, etc.).

The exposition is located in a house, which was built in the period 1862 - 1865 and in which the Headquarters was located. In 1904 the Ministry of War bought the building and in 1907 the museum was opened.

The exposition reflects the activities of the Headquarters of the Russian Army and its Commander-in-Chief, Prince Nikolai Nikolaevich. Special attention is paid to the participation and role of Russian artillery in the war. Among the exhibits you can see many photos, documents and objects from this period, as well as restored cannons used in battle.
