Monument of the Virgin - Haskovo
Overview
In the town of Haskovo is the world's tallest statue of the Blessed Virgin with the Infant. The monument was unveiled in 2003 with the consecration of water by Metropolitan Arseniy, and only two years later, with its impressive 32.8 m in height, it was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records, Religion. In 2009 it entered the list of the Hundred National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria under number 72. The authors of the statue are the sculptors Petyo Alexandrov, Nikola Stoyanov and a team. It is made of polymer concrete and weighs 80 tons. The monument is placed on a 17-meter pedestal, at the base of which there is a small chapel "Nativity of the Virgin". The symbol was not chosen at random. The Mother of God has always been considered the patroness of the city. The Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God, which is celebrated on September 8, is one of the greatest Christian holidays. Since 1993, this day has been accepted as a holiday of the town of Haskovo.
