Momina Skala Rock - protected area

Overview

Momina Skala is a protected area located west of the town of Madzharovo. Momina Skala occupies an area of ​​782.03 hectares. It was declared as such at the suggestion of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds in order to protect protected and endangered plants and animals and with a remarkable landscape rock formations. Includes rock complexes, screes, precipices, forests and pastures.

Momina Skala is located west of the town of Madjarovo on the right bank of the Arda River and south of another protected area - Black Rock. The protected area falls within the lands of two settlements and municipalities, respectively - Madjarovo and the municipality of the same name, and that of the village of Bryagovets, Krumovgrad municipality.

About 600 species of plants, 300 species of butterflies and 160 species of vertebrates have been found in Momina Skala. A significant part of them are endangered both at national and European and global level.

Of the plants, the Black Sea bucket (Fritilaria pontica), the carrot stephanophyte (Steffanophia daucoides), the butterfly salep (Orhis papillionacea), the sardine cleome (Cleome ornithopoides), the delicate micropirum (Micropirum) are especially valuable.

Among the animals are common thorn-tailed tortoise (Testudo hermanni), thorn-tailed tortoise (Testudo graeca), snake lizard (Ophisaurus apodus), snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus), bald eagle (Aquila hrysaetos), wasp (Pernis epivophus) , Blue (Monticola solitarius) and variegated rock thrush (Monticola saxatillis), rock bustard (Sitta neumayer), red-headed shrike (Lanius senator), garden bunting (Emberisza hortulana). Of interest to mammals is the species of forest dormouse (Dryomys nitedula), whose numbers are declining worldwide.
