European holly
Overview
European holly is an evergreen shrub or small tree, atypical of our flora. It is included in the Red Book of Bulgaria in the category of rare species. It is found in Strandzha, the Middle Rhodopes, Sredna Gora, Belasitsa.
In 1972 a new locality was discovered in the Eastern Rhodopes - in the area of the village of Chakalarovo on the territory of the protected area Gyumyurdzhinski Snezhnik. In 1980 it was declared a natural landmark.
In the yard of an abandoned house in the village there is an unusually large representative of this otherwise bushy species. The tree is about 7 m high. Each year it bears a small red fruit.
