Pomorie Monastery "St. Georgi"
Overview
The Monastery of St. Georgi is located in the new part of Pomorie. Marble relief from the II - III century AD. Hr., depicting the image of the Thracian horseman, proves that there was once a Thracian sanctuary at this place.
A community of Orthodox monks lives in the only Bulgarian monastery on the Black sea coast, still being used for its original purpose. Legend has it that in the 7th century a temple or monastery dedicated to St. Georgi already existed in the same place.
At the end of the 18th century, an Ottoman named Salim settled in Anhialo. According to legend, he suffered from a painful incurable disease. One night his old servant Neno dreamed that healing water was springing up in the yard and a handsome young man was riding a white horse - St. Georgi. The saint ordered Neno to dig up the ground in the yard, where a marble icon had been buried. Disturbed by sleep, he dug up secretly, as indicated by St. Georgi, and found а marble icon depicting St. Georgi. At the same moment, water sprung up.
Thanks to the holy spring water, with God's grace, Selim was miraculously healed. Inspired by the great miracle, he converted to Christianity and was baptized with his whole family, and built a small chapel dedicated to St. Georgi.
Thus Selim founded today's monastery. Years later, he became a monk and its first abbot. He donated all his land of 3,800 decares to the monastery.
