Chitalishte "Prosveta 1888" (cultural community centre) - Pomorie
Overview
Bulgarian chitalishte (cultural community centres) are uniformly distributed across the whole territory of Bulgaria. They are established by communities themselves and are open to everyone irrespective of age, gender, political and religious views. The first chitalishte were established in 1856, and they have been recognized as a key organizational unit of Bulgarian society ever since. The efficiency of chitalishte is demonstrated by their increasing numbers over the years and the growing numbers of participants in their activities, representing all ages and population groups.
Chitalishte "Prosveta" in the town of Pomorie was founded in 1888 by a group of enthusiasts, mostly teachers and officials in the former Anhialo. It has had a lot of ups and downs over the years. It was housed in a small wooden building in the beginning, in a massive two-storey building from 1935, and in a modern, glass palace in 2012. It has the largest and richest library in the Municipality of Pomorie - 70,000 books, a wonderful theatre hall, ballet hall, offices.
In 1898 an amateur theater was established at the community center. Generations of theatrical talents have been brought up and raised here.
