Fortress wall of Ahtopol
Overview
Although the fortifications of Agatopolis - walls and semicircular towers - were destroyed too early (according to Evliya леelebi - 17th century), most of them can still be seen. In some places the preserved part of the fortress reaches 7-8 m. In its part on the isthmus the wall is 3.30 m wide together with the additional thickening. On the northeast coast it is thinner - 1.50-2 m. The masonry is mixed - crushed stone with two faces and filling of mortar and smaller stones. The method of construction allows the fortress to be dated generally to the 5th-6th century AD. During drilling excavations near this early medieval wall, a Thracian fortress wall of larger stones with mud solder was discovered, as well as cultural layers from the beginning of the 1st century BC.
