Georgi Velchev Art Museum
Overview
Georgi Velchev Art Museum presents and preserves the work of the artist Georgi Velchev / 1891 - 1955 / - an innovator in Bulgarian art from the 1920s and one of the greatest masters of the seascape in our classical painting. The museum has existed since 1961, when the artist's native house was donated to the city by his brother Vladimir Velchev and his sister Pavlina Velcheva. It has five showrooms with a total area of 100 sq.m. and a fund of 239 works. After a long period in which the museum did not function, in 1996 it was completely restored and renovated by art critic Rumen Serafimov. He was the curator of the museum from 1995 to 2007. The representative exposition of 70 paintings and gouache drawings has been designed and exhibited in a new way. Then, for the first time, the works created in France and Germany between 1920 and 1923 are shown, which present the artist in a different and true light as one of the innovators in the short-lived Bulgarian modernism of the early 1920s. In addition, some of the earliest works of Georgi Velchev from 1913-1920, a series of rural and urban motifs from the 1930s, in which he is comparable to artists such as Nikola Tanev and Danail Dechev, several self-portraits from Germany, France, Canada and Bulgaria. The center and focus of the exhibition are the best seascapes of the painter from the 1930s and 1940s, with which he is an unsurpassed master in our country. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum presents monthly exhibitions of the most important classical and contemporary artists in Bulgaria, carries out international cultural projects, initiates and organizes the largest national biennial of visual arts August in art. With its rich cultural activity and unique artistic atmosphere, the home of the great artist is a preferred and loved place for communication by artists, intellectuals and art connoisseurs.
