Archaeological Museum of Varna
Overview
The Regional History Museum is the historical and archeological museum of the city of Varna. It was founded in 1887 by the brothers Karel and Herman Shkorpil. The museum preserves the oldest gold in the world discovered in 1972 near Varna: the Varna Eneolithic treasure, dated to 4200 - 4600 BC. It consists of jewelry and bracelets, mostly forged or cast. In the alloys, the gold has a purity of 13 to 23 carats, with a total weight of about 6 kg, and is protected by a special regime. The Varna Archaeological Museum is among the Hundred National Tourist Sites. The Varna Archaeological Museum was established by the Varna Archaeological Society on the initiative of Karel and Herman Shkorpil. The first exposition was opened on June 11, 1906 in the building of the Girls' High School, where the museum is housed today. Its first director was Karel Shkorpil, who remained in this position until his death in 1944. In 1945 the Varna Archaeological Museum was nationalized, and in 1952 it was moved to a separate building - a former school on Sheynovo Street №5. In 1983, it was returned to its original building.
