Marina Reka Protected Area
Overview
The protected area "Marina Reka" is located on the land of the village of Kosti in Stradzha and is part of the first Bulgarian nature reserve "Gorna Elenitsa - Silkosia", established in 1933.
"Marina Rека" is the most visited area in botanical tours in Strandzha, because only on an area of 47 hectares you can see all the most characteristic representatives of the flora for this region.
The Marina Reka eco-trail passes through the entire protected area, as the terrain is easily passable, well marked and pleasant for walking. Enjoying the easy transition, you will find yourself surrounded by old forests of eastern beech, Colchis oak. Other rare tree species that you can see here are massifs of sessile oak, hornbeam, as well as evergreen periwinkle and Strandzha blueberry.
There are over 15 tree and over 15 species of evergreen shrubs in the protected area, most of which are endangered species. A yew tree also grows here.
Rare species of birds can be observed, such as the southern white-backed woodpecker, the green woodpecker and others. The thorn, the mouse dragon, the goldfinch and the hedgehog are also inhabitants of this unique area.
