Overview

Near the beach of Ahtopol is the natural landmark "Caspian marsh turtle locality - Nakovo Kladenche area". It is located north of Ahtopol. The natural landmark was declared in order to protect the habitat of the Caspian and common marsh turtle. Both species are strictly protected in Bulgaria and Europe.
In Bulgaria, the Caspian tortoise is found in the southernmost parts of the country - around Petrich, Sandanski, Ivaylovgrad, Svilengrad, Sredets and Ahtopol. On the territory of Strandzha Park, except in the area of ​​Nakovo Kladenche near Ahtopol, they are found in the rivers Veleka and Rezovska, as well as in some of the small rivers in the coastal part.
Their total number in the country is estimated at 600 to 1000 copies. They are found at altitudes up to 200 m, often mixed with the European marsh turtle.
