Overview

"St. Nicholas" is an Eastern Orthodox church located in the Western region of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, at the intersection of Koprivshtitsa Boulevard and Krastyo Rakovski Street.

The history of the church begins at the beginning of the XXI century, when Kiril Vassilev, owner of the company "Helios Metal", sees in the Ukrainian city of Nikolaev a small beautiful church dedicated to St. Nicholas. Kiril Vassilev was impressed and decided to build a replica of the same church in Plovdiv. He contacted the municipality of Zapaden region, which approved his intention and donated land for construction. On the recommendation of His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Plovdiv, the size of the church was increased 2 and a half times compared to the original in Nikolaev.

The begin was made on December 6, 2010, and construction started on July 4, 2011. The temple was built by Helios Metal Center with partner companies. Complex structures are used, which make the building more earthquake resistant and significantly lighter than traditional monolithic construction. For the first time in the history of temple construction in Bulgaria, a metal dome was erected with a diameter of 10.7 meters, weighing 12 tons and a height of 5.5 meters.

After the end of the rough construction in October 2013, the exterior decoration of the temple began. From July 2014 to April 2015, a team of artists and icon painters made the murals.

The church was consecrated on May 9, 2015 with the blessing of Nikolai Plovdivski.
