Church of Saint Ivan Rilski

Overview

The church is relatively new - built in 1934 on the initiative of three people, residents of the city. The builders are from the village of Petkovo, Smolyan region. It was consecrated in 1936 by Metropolitan Cyril of Plovdiv, later Patriarch of Bulgaria. The church has three naves, 18 m long, 10 m wide and 6 m high. The dome is hemispherical, built on an octagonal drum made of 8 arches. It is built of crushed stone mortar solution, partially plastered. The iconostasis and the throne are made of wood carvings (walnut wood), made in Plovdiv. It is 10 m wide and 4 m high. The church is active, it has been declared a cultural monument.
