Overview

St. Francis of Assisi is a Christian church in the village of Belozem, Bulgaria, part of the Sofia-Plovdiv Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. The church is a parish church.

The first massive Catholic church in the village of Belozem was completed and consecrated in 1891. In 1913 the church was the victim of a fire that affected its interior. The Chirpan earthquake destroyed the two bell towers and the entrance to the church. The population managed to take out the altar and the rest of the furniture.

Construction of the new church began in 1930, along with other churches in neighboring Catholic villages. The main merit for this goes to the Apostolic Delegate in Bulgaria Angelo Roncali. The architecture is a three-nave cruciform basilica with two bell towers, which have a more Bulgarian treatment - they are not Italian bell towers, but octagonal vertical volumes; it was designed by architect Kamen Petkov. The new church was consecrated on September 13, 1931.

The church was completely renovated at the beginning of the 21st century. An amphitheater was built.

Temple holiday - October 4. Francis of Assisi died on the night of October 3-4, 1226.
