Church of St. Ascension of the Lord Ahtopol
Overview
The church of St. Ascension is located in the town of Ahtopol, on the eastern part of the peninsula, in its highest part next to the beach.
It is a one-nave, one-apse church measuring 17 x 7 m and about 2.30 m high. Its walls are 0.90 m thick and are built of quarry stone and large joints filled with mortar, with two rows of wooden belts surrounding the building. . The roof is four-pitched with a pitched roof. The apse on the east wall, years ago, was not visible from the outside, which gave the church a residential character. The temple has one entrance (on the south wall) and the floor is 40-50 cm below ground level.
The church was lit by two small windows on the west and north walls, as well as by four pyramidal openings to the roof. This type of overhead lighting, a unique constructive and architectural solution, is found later in some old houses in Strandzha. The reason for choosing this type of lighting should be sought in the desire to give greater security to the building.
