Overview

The Ahtopol Monastery "St. John the Forerunner (Prodrom)", better known as "St. Yani", is located on the cape of the same name south of the port bay of Ahtopol, its shores descend steeply to the sea.
Today there is almost nothing left of this monastery, here and there you can see the beginnings of the foundations of former monastery buildings, if something is preserved, it must be underground.
The medieval monastery "St. John Prodrom" was built on a holy place, known since the first centuries of Christianity, and perhaps even earlier. Confirmation of this is given by the discovered in the water area around the cape St. Yani building pottery from an early Christian church (IV-VI c.), As well as numerous artifacts related to ancient church life. There are suggestions that the main temple of the first Archbishopric of Agathopolis, which was already a fact during the reign of Emperor Justinian the Great (527-565), was located nearby.
Historical information about the monastery "St. Yani" is quite scarce. The time of its foundation is not known for sure. According to historians, it originated no later than the XI century.
