Medieval fortress Ardino
Overview
Krivus is a medieval Bulgarian fortress built in the tenth century. It is located in the southern part of the Rhodopes, about 2 km northwest of the village of Bashevo, Kardzhali region. It is located on a high hill surrounded by the waters of the Arda River.
The entrance, the thick fortress wall, which reaches 5 m in height, and the defensive towers are well preserved from the power of the former fortress. The best preserved is the inner fortress (citadel), whose walls rise to nearly 6 m in height. Interestingly, the fortress obtained water through an underground tunnel that reached the river. There used to be an old church here, located in the central part of the fortress, but only ruins remain. Archaeological excavations and excavations of the fortress have uncovered old coins and ancient Christian symbols and weapons.
