Overview

Sofia City Garden is the oldest park in the capital. It is not so big but is a great spot to have a rest. It is located next to the National Theatre Ivan Vazov and Grand Hotel Sofia.

The city garden was opened in 1978 and was then named Alexander Garden. It was designed according to the plans of architect Anton Kolar, who was also the author of the Grand Hotel Bulgaria project.

The garden is surrounded by important cultural monuments. These are the Bulgarian National Bank, the Ministry of Defense, the National Theater, the Ministry of Transport, the new Grand Hotel Sofia, and the City Art Gallery. The park is a popular place where people play chess outdoors in Sofia. There is also an outdoor musical playground with a diverse range of outdoor musical instruments.

The famous fountain with the sculpture of the bathing woman is located in front of the National Theater. It was designed and built in the 80s of the last century, and in 2012 it was completely reconstructed.

Sofia Municipality and the Association for City Reading Rooms have built a glass pavilion in the city garden, turned into a city reading room. The aim of the project is to have a new, beautiful, and modern reading room in the center of the capital, a place for reading in the greenery of the park and for exchanging books. In the Reading Room, information is provided about Sofia. Thus, the City Garden of Sofia becomes a place where, in addition to a walk in the fresh air, we can also read a book.
