Plovdiv Zoo

Overview

Plovdiv Zoo is located in the Recreation and Culture Park near the Rowing Base. The idea to build a zoo in Plovdiv dates back to the 1930s, when Plovdiv Mayor Bozhidar Zdravkov proposed the formation of a new park with a large lake, swimming pools, a zoo and a stadium on the eastern part of the so-called Royal Island west of the Central Station. The zoo was originally formed as a zoo in the Recreation and Culture Park in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its area reaches 10 decares during the reconstruction of the park and the rowing base in the 1980s.

In the summer of 2008, the zoo in Plovdiv was closed due to the inability to meet the minimum criteria for obtaining a license. The animals have been moved to other zoos or reserves. Shortly afterwards, a conceptual design for the reconstruction and expansion of the zoo on an area of ​​40 decares was created. Eco-defenders are resisting the expansion of the park, which delays the construction of the park for a whole decade, even with procedural violations by the municipal government.

The park is expected to be operational before the end of 2018.

Habitats for 22 different species of animals are envisaged on a territory of 40 decares. All habitats will have green and water areas. The fences will be made of natural materials - fallen trees, logs, rock massifs of natural and artificial stone and more. Feeders, drinkers, hollows, sheds and rooms for protection in adverse weather conditions are also provided. About 3,000 square meters with an artificial lake are planned for the bears' habitat, and the wolf's habitat will increase from 9 to 900 square meters. Among the other animal species that are expected are Asian otters, wild boars, lynxes, camels, llamas. , Patagonian mara, etc. Some species such as bison and bronze turkeys will inhabit a habitat. To the right of the entrance is an aquarium measuring 22 by 10 meters for marine fish.

The Plovdiv Zoo was closed for reconstruction and expansion in the summer of 2008. Before that it was one of the attractions for Plovdiv residents and their families.
