Children's Railway Plovdiv
Overview
The Children's Railway is a narrow-gauge railway line located at the foot of the Youth Hill in Plovdiv. It is the second children's railway in Bulgaria - after the one in Kardzhali designed by Valentina Yochkova.
Construction of the railway began on April 21, 1979. It was built by pupils and students with the assistance of Plovdiv citizenship for the 35th anniversary of the Dimitrov pioneer organization "Septemvriyche" and for the first assembly "Flag of Peace". The rails and wagons are from the railway line Kocherinovo - Rila Monastery, closed in 1954. Later the wagons were replaced.
It was opened as the Children's Railway "Flag of Peace" on September 23, 1979: The annual holiday of the Dimitrov pioneer organization "Septemvriyche". 25 tickets were printed for its opening and badges of honor were made and distributed to the official guests. It was temporarily closed in 1997.
After repairs by municipal order, the attraction was reopened as a Children's Railway on September 22, 2007. The line was repaired in 2013, replacing the traction battery for its locomotive with a more powerful one, allowing 6 courses per day.
