Monument to Vasil Aprilov-Gabrovo

Overview

The monument of the Revivalist Vasil Evstatiev Aprilov in Gabrovo is the work of the sculptor Kiril Todorov. It rises in front of the entrance of the high school, named after its founder V. Aprilov. It was opened on November 1, 1935 with a great public celebration, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Aprilov High School.

The monument presents Vasil Aprilov in natural growth with a keen eye and a book in his hands. At the foot of the statue are depicted the stages of development of Bulgarian education. The then mayor of Gabrovo, Iliya Kozhuharov, has a great merit for the construction of this monument. He provided funds, went to Rome at his own expense to speed up the sculptural work. One of the main organizers of the holidays and celebrations on the occasion of anniversaries of the life of Vasil Aprilov. The monument is a work of sculpture by Kiril Todorov. When the competition for the monument was announced, Kiril Todorov was in Rome, where he worked successfully after graduating from the local academy. He sent his sketches and models, with which he won the competition, after which he returned to Bulgaria and made the monument in a little over a year.
