Overview

On January 2, 1835, the First Bulgarian Secular School by the Bell-Lancaster method was opened with donations from the patriotic citizens of Gabrovo Vasil Aprilov, Nikola Palauzov, Vasil Rasheev and others. For the needs of the school the first textbooks, manuals and aids are created, which are perceived as a standard by the later Bulgarian schools. From 1872 the Gabrovo school grew into the First Complete High School in the enslaved Bulgarian lands. From 1889 it took the name of its benefactor Vasil Aprilov and was called Aprilov High School. A new stage in the development of the high school began in 1988, when on January 25 the Ministry of Culture, Science and Education approved a new Statute of the high school. , with national admission of students, without social restrictions. In 1992, it became a state school called the National Aprilov High School. there are four profiles - in Bulgarian language and literature; in history, archeology and ethnography; in philosophy, sociology and law and in culture, art history and aesthetics. The beginning begins with the development of curricula and their application from the 1988/89 academic year. Competent research teams from Bulgarian universities Sofia University, the universities of Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and Shumen prepare the content and issues of the curricula as a guarantee for the new educational model. The new programs include hours of classes in archeology, ethnography, linguistics, journalism, rhetoric, basics of theater, cultural history, etc., as well as specialized practices in museums, archives, libraries, local media, archeological excavations. Already in 1988, 655 candidates from 44 settlements in Bulgaria took the first entrance exams, of which 120 with the best results formed the first humanitarian class of the high school. Interest in high school is not diminishing today. This necessitates the opening of a foreign language profile with classes studying English, French and German, which meets the modern needs of Bulgarian society. The source of satisfaction is the excellent success at the end of each school year, as well as the realization in higher education institutions, where 95% of the graduates of the Aprilov High School enter. The pride of the high school are the students, accepted as students in higher educational institutions in the country without a competitive exam, after a brilliant performance at national Olympiads in philosophy. As early as 1994/95, students from the Aprilov High School successfully participated in the special competitions of the Open Society Foundation for one-year training in private and public colleges in the USA, as well as successfully obtained language diplomas in German in a competition organized by the Austrian Embassy. in Sofia. Since 1991, Aprilov High School has joined the system of associated schools at UNESCO. This provides an opportunity for fruitful work on the main topic "National self-determination as an attitude to world culture." Over 30 students participated in the writing of the brochure "Visit Bulgaria". The high school hosts and participates in the national exhibition "Against Xenophobia, Racism, Anti-Semitism and Intolerance", takes part in a subregional festival on the Greek island of Chios, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the UN and UNESCO, at the initiative of the organization in Dubrovnik and in the first Youth Forum studying world cultural heritage. In Norway, under the UNESCO program, an ecological expedition "Bozhenka" was held in the area of ​​the architectural and historical reserve "Refugees" near Gabrovo and the educational program "Environment and environmental problems" at the Regional Center for Environment and Ecology for Eastern Europe based in Budapest.
