Overview

The House of Humor and Satire is a museum in Gabrovo of national and world importance. It was created on the "false" April 1 (International Joke Day) in 1972 and is a proud heir to the local folk humor and merry carnival traditions in the Bulgarian capital of humor. The author of the motto of the Museum - "The world survived because it laughed", is Radoi Ralin. Its building is located in the central part of the city. It was designed by architect Karl Kandulkov on the foundations of an old tannery of the Kalpazanovi Brothers. The exhibition halls of the Home have a total area of ​​4000 m2. His emblem is an earth globe with cat's eyes and ears to "see and hear" world humor through the senses of the symbol of Gabrovo humor - the cat. The purpose of the Museum is to collect, exhibit and promote the humor of the peoples in the field of visual arts, literature and folklore, merry holidays and masquerade traditions around the world. The museum is a real palace with its 9 exhibition halls, library, recording studio, conference hall, stand for souvenirs and publications, free parking. It offers its guests four floors with permanent exhibitions ("The Roots of Gabrovo Humor", "Paradise", "Sin", "Planet Gabrovo", "The Mask - the Face of the Holiday", "Carnivals in the World"), temporary exhibitions and many fun attractions - curved mirrors, copper vats, a huge figure of the Gabrovo cat with a cut tail and more. The museum has a fund of 37,500 works of art by over 9,000 authors from 173 countries around the world: of which approximately 22,000 cartoons, over 3,000 satirical graphics, over 1,000 paintings, about 1,000 sculptures, about 9,500 photographs, over 200 posters, over 300 carnivals. masks and costumes. Another part of the museum collection of the Home is the specialized library of 25,000 titles and 1,000 volumes of periodicals in 35 languages. Most of these works of art are donated. With the works from its fund, the House has organized over 500 thematic, group, individual and traveling exhibitions in Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East.
