Kurtpasha Tower
Overview
The Kurtpasha Tower is located in the western part of the central square "Hristo Botev" in Vratsa near the Drama Theater, the Historical Museum and the Art Gallery. With its original silhouette, despite its small size (square with a side of 5.90 m and a height of 11 m), the tower gives the impression of a medieval castle. It is one of several similar towers that existed during the Ottoman era. It was used as a fortified dwelling of a local feudal lord. The tower dates from the 17th century, but its elements and method of construction show continuity from the fortress construction of the Bulgarian Middle Ages - 14th century. It consists of underground, ground and 2 floors for living. The basement is vaulted, while the floors are separated by wooden beams. The ground floor was reached by a wooden ladder, which was retracted in case of danger. The first floor is 3 m high and is suitable for living and defense at the same time. The second floor is built of bay windows on consoles on four sides. This floor is 2.50 m high and is separated from the first by a double joist and filling of mortar and stones - for fire protection. There are 12 muzzles, and between the consoles - openings for pouring hot liquids on the enemy. The floors are reached by wooden one-armed stairs.
