Overview

The Municipal Art Gallery "District House" is located near the main square "Freedom" in the center of Dupnitsa. It occupies a building called the District House. The gallery also uses the only surviving mosque in the city, located on the same Ivan Vazov Street, as an exhibition hall. According to historians, the building was built in the late thirteenth century. In the beginning the District House was a barrier house, and later a konak. In 1972 it was declared a monument of culture and architecture. In 1979 NIPC in Sofia developed a project for restoration and adaptation of the building, implemented in the period 1981 - 1986. Since then, it organizes cultural events - exhibitions, literary presentations of books, poetry evenings and others. In the gallery "District House" prominent artists from the region and the country have exhibited their paintings, watercolors, graphics, small sculptures and sculptors. The National History Museum also visited with its expositions. Part of the exhibition is housed in a 16th century mosque, which was built on the remains of an Orthodox church. The gallery is among the cultural centers of Dupnitsa.
