Dimitar Dobrovich Art Gallery, Sliven
Overview
The art gallery dates back to 1905, when in his will, the Revival artist Dimitar Dobrovich left 14 of his works in his hometown. With them the artist Yordan Kyuvliev arranged the first exposition in the library of Chitalishte "Zora". After the tragic death of Yordan Kyuvliev, his mother Zoitsa Kyuvlieva bequeathed to the gallery 40 of his works.
In 1965, the Dimitar Dobrovich Art Gallery was established as an independent cultural institute with its own exhibition building and official name - Dimitar Dobrovich Art Gallery.
The gallery houses over 6,000 works of art - paintings, graphics, sculpture, applied art, icons and church utensils.
The collection includes works from the 17th century to the present day. It has two significant collections
· "Western European graphics" from the XIX-XX century - donated by Prof. Bogomil Raynov
· "Japanese engravings" from the XVIII-XIX centuries.
The gallery has four permanent exhibitions:
· Contemporary Bulgarian art
· Old Sliven
· Christian art, since 2005
· Western European graphics
Two of the permanent exhibitions - "Christian Art" and "Contemporary Bulgarian Art" are exhibited in a separate hall - "Sirak Skitnik".
The exhibition "Contemporary Bulgarian Art" presents works by Dimitar Dobrovich, Yordan Kyuvliev, Alexander Bozhinov, Nikola Mihailov, Elena Karamihaylova, Elisaveta Konsulova-Vazova, Nikola Tanev, Sirak Skitnik, Ivan Milev, Vladimir Dimitrov-Maistora, Nikolay Raynov, Kiril Petrov , Bencho Obreshkov, Stoyan Venev, Nenko Balkanski, Boris Denev, Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, David Peretz, Vasil Barakov, Ivan Nenov, Dechko Uzunov, and others.
