Overview

Encho Pironkov (born in 1932) is from the generation of artists who in the 60s of the twentieth century updated the appearance not only of Plovdiv school of painting, but also of the Bulgarian fine arts. In the time of totalitarian culture, they created and developed a new contemporary plastic thinking, which introduced them to European artistic processes and marked the beginning of Bulgarian modernism by establishing a new view in terms of form and color.

Encho Pironkov's style is characterized by a strong expressive gesture, a sense of spontaneity and naturalness. He fragmented the pictorial space and inscribed in it figures occupying ritual poses. The communication with these compositions is dramatically enhanced by a kind of mystique of the message and by a characteristically strong opposition of light and dark in them. Light flows from the form not as lighting, but as a structural and behavioral determining factor. Darkness gives space to the imagination, it is a special kind of personal revelation, a mystery that should not come to light.

This painting is built on the principle that if one segment of it (detail) is not occupied by one thing, it will be occupied by another. In its analysis we establish things that we have already known and acknowledged at first sight. It is recognizable without having to be known. It suggests a sense of conviction, security, a special atmosphere and images whose description slips away. Although convincing, it cannot be explained. It seems to be created without being challenged, to be received without being received. As an action that is not preceded by desire. Encho Pironkov's painting is not in the ordinary sense of the word, it is a state unprovoked by will.

This art developed and enriched modern plastic views and ideas. He created part of the new mythology in Bulgarian painting.
