Hellenistic tomb in the village of Sinemorets

Overview

On August 26, 2006, in a heavily destroyed mound located in the village of Sinemorets, the Strandzha expedition discovered one of the richest graves from the Hellenistic period in Europe. It belongs to a woman. The ritual is cremation on the spot. hot ashes are placed over 180 gold and about 30 silver ornaments, as well as ceramic gifts.

The jewelry is extremely rich. Perfectly applied decorative techniques rank them among the best representatives, and some of them, such as earrings, among the true masterpieces of ancient jewelry. The composition of the earrings represents the goddess Nike, who controls the biga. The precisely made miniature sculptures of the goddess and the two horses undoubtedly betray the hand of a virtuoso master.
No less exquisite is the golden head of a bull, which is the central pendant of one of the necklaces. In the center of this ornament is mounted a stone analogous to the stone from the tile - part of the crown-diadem.

In the tile from the gum-diadem is inserted the so-called "Heracles' Knot". The most valuable in this subject is the inscription in Greek, which reads "Demetrios made for Kortoduntos". The presence of this inscription greatly increases the value of the discovery, because inscriptions on gold objects from this period in Thrace are missing, and all over the world are few. number.

It is indisputable that the tomb near Sinemorets belongs to a woman of high social status, who lived during the late Hellenistic era - II century BC. She probably inhabited the large fortified house discovered in 2007 near the mound.
