Drama Theater - Plovdiv

Overview

Drama Theater "N. O. Masalitinov ”is a state theater in Plovdiv. It is the first professional theater in Bulgaria. It was founded on December 11, 1881. It is named after the artist and director Nikolay Masalitinov, considered to be the founder of the modern theater school in Bulgaria. The patriarch of Bulgarian literature Ivan Vazov was the inspiration for the creation of the theater, who on the day of its opening summarized with his pen: "So a solid foundation of the Bulgarian National Theater has already been laid."

Many of the stars of the Bulgarian theater and cinema have established themselves in the troupe of the theater: the directors Krikor Azaryan, Lyuben Groys, Rusi Karabaliev, Hristo Hristov, Mladen Kiselov, Ivan Dobchev, Nikolay Lambrev, Yulia Ognyanova; actresses Tsvetana Maneva, Zlatina Todeva, Mimoza Bazova, Maria Stefanova, Kristina Yaneva, Nevena Kaludova; the actors Stefan Danailov, Todor Kolev, Marius Donkin, Rusi Chanev, Yavor Milushev, Ventsislav Yankov, Hristo Mutafchiev, Georgi Rusev and others.

The theater performs in Plovdiv, the country and abroad.

Plovdiv Drama Theater is a state repertoire theater, a leading national cultural institute. His troupe over the years has created many of the stars of Bulgarian theater and cinema. His productions and actors have won numerous national and international awards. The theater was awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria for high achievements in the field of management and marketing in 2012 and 2016.

In 2016, the Drama Theater-Plovdiv completed its reconstruction as a modern highly equipped European theater stage. It has a large hall (468 seats), a chamber hall (117 seats), a Zoom area for theatrical and other art experiments (350 seats) and a summer stage (250 seats). The theater hosts the Autumn International Theater Festival "Scene at the Crossroads", whose founder and artistic director is Prof. Stefan Danailov.
