House of traditions

Overview

The museum is located in the village of Staro Zhelezare / 12 km from the town of Hissarya / and is housed in a beautiful building with Revival architecture, in the center of the village. The exhibits are composed in thematic corners, the most important being "Bread" and "Wedding".

Through these basic Bulgarian symbols the life and history of the local community is traced. There are also places where visitors can grind red pepper and spices to prepare the famous colorful salt. Or to spin wool with a hurka and a spindle in the corner for "homework". The rich collection of authentic costumes, aprons and wrinkles reveals the color of the local Thracian costume. The rites and rituals typical for this region are also shown, as well as some amulets and spells used in ancient times. The museum has a "Dyukyan-shop" where handmade clothes, socks and souvenirs are sold.

The "House of Traditions" organizes for tourist groups, by prior arrangement, demonstrations of seasonal rituals, ancient crafts and household activities, as well as tasting of home-cooked meals and drinks.
