Overview

In 1933, a group of locals established an archeological society with the aim of collecting, preserving and promoting the rich archeological heritage of Hissarya and its region. Reserve General Todor Markov, a resident of Hissarya, was elected chairman of the company. In his villa he created a personal museum collection, which in 1953 grew into a state museum. Since 1960, the museum has been housed in its current building at 8 Al. Stamboliyski Street. The museum building is a reconstructed residential building from the 1940s for the needs of the museum. In 1979 a new building was built in the same style and the museum was expanded to the south. It now has a U-shape with an exhibition yard and a lapidarium. The museum has an archeological profile. Its exposition reflects the millennial material and spiritual culture in Hissarya and its region from the Neolithic Age (V millennium BC) to the Renaissance.

The archeological department presents interesting artifacts from different historical epochs found in the city and nearby areas. Models of emblematic for the city ancient sites - a Roman amphitheater, a peristyle residential building, an early Christian basilica and the southern gate "Camels" give an idea of the real appearance of these landmarks. The museum exhibits the latest finds discovered in 2014 during the archaeological excavations of the Roman baths and the Thracian settlement, trade and cult complex from the V - IV century BC. near the village of Krastevich.
