Overview

In 2012, 3 km. south of the town of Byala in the area of camping "Luna" (hotel "Sol Luna Bay") was discovered a kiln for building ceramics. The late antique furnace was two-chamber with vertical draft and consisted of several interconnected structural elements - lower chamber, support, grill, upper chamber, channel and pre-furnace pit. The furnace dates from the V-VI century. The facility was used mainly for the production of tiles and bricks for fortifications and public buildings on Cape St. Athanasius. The site for its construction on the now defunct Cape St. John was chosen because of the availability of suitable clay and water. With funds provided by the management of the Sol Luna Bay Hotel, the kiln for building ceramics was completely restored and exposed to visitors.
