Overview

The ancient fortress on Cape St. Atanas, near the town of Byala is an archeological monument of national importance. It is the largest ancient wine production center, opened to this day in Bulgaria. The fortress was discovered in 2009 and has the most common dating from the Classical era to Late Antiquity (VI century BC - VII century AD). The historical site had a main cult and sacred significance until the II-III century AD, and by the VII century it gradually grew and became a late antique fortress city and early Christian bishopric. Since 2014, the ancient fortress of Cape St. Athanasius is open to visitors. The following can be seen: a beautifully restored early Christian basilica; three rare baptisms for baptism, tracing the development of early Christianity; the largest ancient winery discovered to date in Bulgaria and many other remarkable monuments, telling about the ancient past of the Bulgarian Middle Black Sea coast.
