Enihan Peak
Overview
Svoboda (until February 12, 1971. Eni khan baba, Enihanbaba, Eni khan tepe, Enihantepe, from 1946 to 1971 unofficially Momchil is a peak in the Rhodope Mountains 1915 m high. According to Vasil Dechov, during field trips to Momchil Peak, an old Thracian sanctuary from the 11th to the 7th century BC was established possibly the largest sanctuary of Dionysius mentioned by Herodotus, and the huge stones at the top may have been used for astronomical observations and predictions as early as prehistoric times. The highly controversial newly built tomb of Enihan Baba was erected on the archeological monument. According to the mayor of the village of Davidkovo, Sevda Cholakova, the area is described by Herodotus as a sanctuary of the god Dionysus. Here, for centuries, the Rhodopes and the Bulgarian Christians and the Bulgarian Muslims have been sacrificing in the summer. A sign in memory of Momchil Voivoda was erected on the top, broken by unknown persons, today it has been restored and stands on the top again.
