Church of the Ascension of Jesus Kalugerovo village
Overview
"Holy Ascension of Jesus " is a permanent church of the Botevgrad spiritual district of the Lovchani diocese of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It was founded in 1864 and is located in Botevgrad, Sofia region.
The construction of the church began in 1860 and lasted until 1864, when it was consecrated on Spasov Day. Its painting was completed in 1866. It is believed that on the site of today's church there was a chapel, on the foundations of which a later church was built under the name "St. George". In 1826 there was a cell school attached to it. According to local historian Tashko Ninov, in 1860 the Church of Holy Ascension of Jesus was built on the foundations of the old St. George Church. The self-taught medical master Vuno Markov is pointed out as a builder. The painting in the church has not been signed, but based on an artistic assessment it is believed that the first painter was the Debar master Blazhe Damyanov from Tresonche. Only the year in which the painting of the temple ends is written. The icons and the iconostasis are part of the exposition of the Botevgrad Historical Museum.
