Thracian tombs mounds №12 and №13

Overview

The two large necropolises of Sboryanovo are located on both sides of the Krapinec canyon - the Eastern and the Western. The length of each of them is about 2 km. The frequent mention of Stomogil in the Middle Ages is due not only to the fact that there are 100 mounds, but also because here is the highest point of the whole region - the Great Mumjilar mound, with 289 meters above sea level.

Different in size, the tombs suggest a sense of eternity and grandeur. Their special location in relation to each other attracts the attention of researchers and according to their preliminary observations it is assumed that certain groups of mounds are a mirror image of some constellations - "Berenice's Hair", "Orion", "Plow" and "Big Dog". Burials of people and animals, local and imported vessels, jewelry and other burial gifts were found in the excavated mounds.

The necropolises are a result of the existence of the ghetto capital - on the high peaks around it, is the last home of its rulers and the noble ghettos.

The group of mounds at the northern end of the Eastern mound necropolis has been fully studied. Near each other are 3 stone tombs with a semi-cylindrical vault, built in the late IV - early III century BC. The two smaller tombs - №12 and №13, are located at the southeastern end of the group of mounds and are classic examples of the common in the Hellenistic era tombs - single-chamber with a vestibule covered with a semi-cylindrical vault. Their decoration in terms of quality of construction and clean lines rival the best examples of the era. They are almost the same size, only their sliding doors open in opposite directions. These are the first gates of this type found on the Balkan Peninsula, but have long been known in Asia Minor and this confirms the many connections of local tribes with distant lands.
