Ancient and medieval fortress Asara

Overview

The fortress was built on the ruins of a prehistoric sanctuary. It is believed that some of the first attempts at mining were made in this area, and that the fortress served to guard the mines. One of the four towers of the medieval fortress is partially preserved. There is a carved trapezoidal altar and a tomb in the fortress. In the first half of the twentieth century, the foundations of a medieval church and valuable finds were discovered here.

From the top, where the Asara fortress is located, there is a view of the Eastern Rhodopes, where is their highest peak "Stramni" hill with an altitude of 960 m.
Asara is a common name of a fortress in the Bulgarian lands, even only in the Rhodopes, it is not the only one.
