Rock niches village of Mineralni bani
Overview
The rock niches in the City of the Sun near the village of Angel Voyvoda in the municipality of Mineralni Bani are the size of human figures. The most interesting of the rock culture of Angel Voivoda are the huge complexes of rock niches, said archaeologist Zdravko Dimitrov. In the 80s of the last century, 54 pieces were registered on the archeological map of Bulgaria, and now another 20 new ones have been established. All are of different shape and depth, there are at the southern end on the way to the rock tomb, there is also on the eastern slope. They could date from the late Eneolithic to the Roman era and Christianization. The excavations near the village of Angel Voyvoda show such a long performance of this Thracian rock tradition. The largest rock niches, which are almost a meter high and well smoothed, are made with huge iron tools and could be from the Roman era. They are quite difficult to compare with the smaller and rough-hewn ones, which according to Zdravko Dimitrov are probably related to the Bronze and Iron Ages, and even to the Stone-Copper Age.
