Shumksi Monastery "St. Archangel Michael"

Overview

The Shumski Monastery "St. Archangel Michael", also called Lopushnenski, is located near the village of Shuma, 40 km northwest of Sofia and 6 km east of Godech. The monastery is located at the northern foot of Mount Chepan, near the village of Lopushna. The monastery can be reached by immediately after the village of Shuma, in the direction of Godech, turn off on an asphalt road to the left, leading to the village of Lopushna, and after about 2 km on it, to the left of the bus stop take a dirt road. and arriving right at the gates of the monastery. The road is passable by car only in dry weather, and if you walk, the distance from Lopushnya to the monastery is taken in about 20 minutes.

The monastery was founded in the XI century and then destroyed. It was restored in the 19th century. The monastery complex consists of a church, residential and farm buildings. The church is very old and unique frescoes are preserved in it. The monastery is currently in operation.
